Curtis was born a Filipina in Bolinao Pangasinan. Her father is an Australian lawyer, James Ernest Curtis Smith. Her father wed Ojales an Filipina woman from Bolinao Pangasinan, in 1982. Her older sibling Jasmine has also become an actress. Clare is an aunty of them on the father's end. Clare passed away at 4 months of age in 2007 after suffering from an illness of the heart.
